We’ve been delivering precision engineering solutions for southern industries since 1971.
Originally established as McLeay Precision Engineering, the business merged with Melhop Engineering in the late 1980s before settling at its current Spey Street location. In 1999, workshop manager Jelle Keizer and estimator Vic Boyington took ownership, investing early in CNC technology to drive precision manufacturing capability.
In 2009, the business was acquired by Southland businessman and Burt Munro Rally Chairman Wayne Affleck and rebranded as MPE Ltd. Wayne continued to invest in advanced technology and diversify the company’s client base, leaving a strong legacy following his passing in 2018.
In 2020, Chris Hughes took the helm of the business and, in 2021, stepped into the role of Managing Director alongside his wife, Jade, who was a shareholder. In 2026, MPE celebrates its 55th anniversary in business, and Chris continues to invest in CNC machines, additional innovation and new technology.

Chris Hughes
Managing Director
Chris Hughes is a Southland local with more than 25 years’ experience in the engineering industry. His career includes senior leadership roles in large corporate organisations and experience as a Managing Director in a medium-sized engineering business, where he led significant growth and diversification.
Chris is passionate about Southland’s business community and the future of its people. He actively supports regional business organisations and initiatives focused on youth development and long-term regional prosperity.
As Managing Director of MPE Ltd, Chris is proud to lead a highly skilled team that continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible and delivers finely tuned engineering solutions for industry across the South.
